Retreatment

About Retreatment

Sometimes, a tooth that has already had a root canal doesn’t heal properly or becomes painful or infected again months—or even years—later. When this happens, root canal retreatment may be needed to give the tooth a second chance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a retreatment?

You may need retreatment if there’s persistent pain, infection, or a new issue like decay or a cracked filling affecting the previously treated tooth

Will I feel uncomfortable after the retreatment?

In some cases, treatment is completed over two visits. During the first appointment, the previous filling material is removed and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly disinfected. This process alters the internal environment of the tooth, which can trigger a healing response from the body. As a result, some patients may experience temporary discomfort or swelling following the procedure. While not all individuals are affected, this reaction is a recognized and possible part of the healing process.

What if this procedure isn't successful?

If retreatment isn’t successful, a minor surgical procedure called an apicoectomy may be recommended to save the tooth.
